(...) We were the only three German girls in the class. The two Marias behaved very bravely, but I wept bitterly. I noticed that the other students were whispering to each other. As soon as the class was over, I ran to the streetcar, so as to be alone with my sorrow. Tosya, a classmate, hurried after me in order to console me. She placed her hand on my shoulder and said: "Anna, this is not the end of the world. Who knows, maybe the future has something really special in store for you." This just resulted in more tears. What good could the future hold for a German Kulak's child! I returned home with a heavy heart. What would my siblings say? (...)
